The Academy of Medical Sciences was established in 1935 by Law no. 91, approved by the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies and then promulgated by Royal Decree no. 176/1935. This was made possible thanks to the efforts of Academician Daniel Danielopolu, who became the Permanent Secretary of the Academy until 1948, when it was disbanded by the communist regime.

In 1969, by Decree of the State Council no. 590, it was re-established by the communist regime, with reduced powers compared to the law promulgated by Acad. Daniel Danielopolu.

After 1989, the Academy of Medical Sciences was reorganized by Academician Stefan Milcu, as its President, and in 2004, by Law no. 264, the situation from 1935 was restored, and it currently operates based on this law and the Statute approved by Government Decision no. 1665/2004.

The Academy has a fixed number of 190 full members, 41 corresponding members, and honorary members from both within the country and abroad. It is worth mentioning that throughout its existence, the Academy of Medical Sciences has been a prestigious institution and an active participant in medical research, never including political figures from different eras among its members.

In addition to the Academy of Medical Sciences, there are the Foundation of the Academy of Medicine, the Publishing House of the Academy of Medical Sciences, and the Bulletin of the Academy of Medical Sciences, which is regularly published.
