Professor Stephen Hillier, Vice Principal International of Edinburgh University – a „Top 20” university in medical domain – made a visit at the Academy of Medical Sciences on April 4th, 2014.
The co-ordinator of this action was Acad. Prof. Dr. Dorin Sarafoleanu.
As Professor Stephen Hillier was interested in alternative medicine, as having lower costs and very good results in metabolic diseases, having WHO recommendation to be extended, with highest implementation in the USA, the Romanian Academy of Medical Sciences included a visit at the National Institute of Complementary and Alternative Medicine, where he was presented efficient diagnosis and treatment equipment and resources. The institute of complementary medicine, which is on the Platform of the Academy of Medical Sciences, is co-ordinated by Prof. Dr. Florin Bratila, honorary member of our academy and by Dr. Corneliu Moldovan, general manager of this research centre of the academy.
Professor Stephen Hillier, impressed by his three hours visit, expressed his wish to start a concrete collaboration, signing a protocol within this line.
The visit continued with a meeting with members of the Academy of Medical Sciences. The president of the Academy of Medical Sciences, Prof. Dr. Irinel Popescu led this working and festive meeting. The meeting started with discussions on various medical topics. Professor Stephen Hillier’s presentation, on latest theoretical and practical medical news was followed by interesting discussions.
Next, Acad. Prof. Dr. Dorin Sarafoleanu read a Laudation comprising a complex presentation of the distinguished scientific personality of Professor Doctor Stephen Hillier. The president of the Romanian Academy of Medical Sciences, Acad. Prof. Dr. Irinel Popescu awarded Professor Stephen Hillier the Diploma of Honorary Member of Romanian Academy of Medical Sciences.
After the festive meeting, Professor Stephen Hillier had separate meetings with several coordinators of Research Centres of the Platform of the Academy of Medical Sciences: Acad. Irinel Popescu – founder and coordinator of hepatic transplant centre, Acad. Victor Voicu – president of Bucharest Branch of the Academy of Medical Sciences, Prof. Dr. Emanoil Ceaușu – corresponding member of the academy, Prof. Dr. Elena Hermeneanu – representative of Life Research Centre from Arad, a centre with highest level equipment, including electronic microscopy, ultracentrifuges, tissue cultures, stem cells etc. Concrete collaboration protocols have been established, on exact scientific topics for various specialties.
A large number of mass media reporters participated in this prestigious action.
This event represented both a honour and the starting of real collaboration with a university ranked in “top 20”, representing a beginning which will be extended also with other prestigious universities.
The Gala Dinner was attended by Prof. Dr. Stephen Hillier, Acad. Prof. Dr. Irinel Popescu, president of the Academy of Medical Sciences, Acad. Prof. Dr. Victor Voicu, Acad. Prof. Dr. Dorin Sarafoleanu and Prof. Dr. Elena Hermeneanu, pro-rector of „Vasile Goldiș” University, Arad.
